37 Feet From Stardom with Monique Moses

“I did not want to be a Doobie Brother. I didn’t want to be a Doobie sister, Doobie auntie, nothing.”
This week on 108.9 The Hawk, Whisp Turlington and Geoff “The Angry Man” Garlock welcome legendary background singer Shelly Claymore to the Rock & Roll RV. Shelly has sung on every classic rock song you’ve ever loved, every classic rock song you’ve pretended to love, and possibly several instruments you thought were flutes. Now she’s telling all in her new memoir, 37 Feet From Stardom, a 4,000-page journey through music history, cryogenic ambition, legal disputes, Doobie Brother rejection, and the truth behind the Claymore Signal.
Shelly is played by comedian, actor, writer, and improviser Monique Moses from Astronomy Club. Monique talks about the Astronomy Club reunion, DCM, Chicago’s Improv and Sketch Fest, and why everyone should watch Astronomy Club on Netflix. Also, she brings Shelly Claymore into Val Verde with the confidence of a woman who has sung background on Boston, Hendrix, Pearl Jam, Peter Gabriel, The Who, Metallica, Foreigner, and songs no one can legally prove she was removed from.
Also on this week’s broadcast:
- Shooter’s Bar and Buffet hosts its “Is This Your Tab?” Amnesty Event, where old Bush-era bar tabs can finally be settled and weapons are collected at the door for one day only.
- Producer Scotty Leaf receives a live HR review and learns that “do better” is both a note and a complete management philosophy.
- Art Spart Traffic reports that Val Verde is completely jammed by residents lining up for a new Crazy Taxi game that may not exist yet.
- Geoff’s Good Rock Facts reveals Geoff “Skunk” Baxter’s shocking role in the original pilot of Saved by the Bell.
- Books-A-Thousand prepares for Shelly Claymore’s two-minute signing, immediately followed by Blue Oyster Cult, which is poor planning by Scotty and everyone knows it.
